The Queensferry Crossing has had to close to traffic due to ice accreting to the cable stays on three occasions since it opened to traffic in September 2017. Over the last winter there were three occasions where ice accreted to either the stays or the towers, however the risk to bridge users was assessed on each occasion and it was deemed unnecessary to close the bridge to traffic.
The Forth Road Bridge is currently a public transport corridor and only authorised vehicles can use the bridge. There remain a number elements of the Bridge that require refurbishment or replacement.
This presentation, originally made to the Forth Bridges Forum public meeting on 14 June 2022, provides an update on the work being carried out to mitigate the effects of ice accretion on the Queensferry Crossing, and on maintenance schemes on the Forth Road Bridge over the coming year that may require carriageway closures to complete.
