Access RestrictionsThere’s nothing quite like the sight, sound and smells of a steam engine and a trip to Bo’Ness and Kinneil Steam Railway will delight visitors young and old.
This award-winning heritage railway offers steam train rides from April to October, with special events in December. There’s a museum with lots of fun, interactive displays and you can even try your hand at being a signalman or climb aboard the beautiful vintage Glasgow Subway car to be transported back in time. Enthusiasts can also see restoration in action with the new engineering workshop viewing gallery.
The railway is operated by volunteers and there are lots of special experiences on offer from afternoon tea on a steam train to murder mystery dining experiences.
The nearby Kinneil Estate (a public park and nature reserve) houses a lovely little museum with an audio-visual show, displays and artefacts dating back to Roman times. It is also home to the historic Kinneil House (with its resident ghost), public art, a charming walled garden, a Roman fortlet and more history than you can shake a stick at, including the Roman Antonine Wall. It’s a beautiful place to explore and there are lots of walking and cycling paths – some with a free audio guide.
